It’s better to have an agent for submitting your manuscripts to different publishers. They are important because of overseas marketing of ur book. They have better knowledge how to approach publishers and how to make them agree to take ur manuscript bcoz it’s their work. They will have commission of 15-20% of every copy of ur selling book.
